Staff Pros Start Strong At Waste Management Open
Derek Lamely, Trevor Immelman and Phil Mickelson all delivered solid rounds on Thursday at the Waste Management Open, where TPC Scottsdale played unusually tough throughout the afternoon. Lamely shot 31 on the inward nine and posted a 5-under 66 in the first round. The Callaway Staff Pro finished the day T6 and just two shots off the lead as he looks for his second career PGA Tour win.
While Lamely dropped five birdies over his final nine holes, Mickelson confidently navigated the greens with his Odyssey Putter. Lefty needed just 24 putts during his round of 3-under 68 and one-putted six consecutive greens at one point. “I’m looking forward to continuing this streak and hopefully getting in contention for the weekend because I feel really confident on the greens,” Mickelson said. He’s playing RAZR X Muscleback Irons and a HEX Black Tour Golf Ball this week.
Immelman wasn’t initially scheduled to play this event, but after playing in the Farmers Insurance Open last week, he had a feeling his game was heading in the right direction and decided to make the trip to Scottsdale. The move paid off on Thursday, where he fired a 4-under 67. “It’s just a matter of me getting some momentum and hitting the right shots at the right time,” Immelman said. “I definitely felt like it was going to be better for me to stay out here and just get more and more comfortable every week that goes by.” Immelman is using a RAZR Fit Driver during the event.
On the European Tour, Danny Willett is currently T10 in windy conditions at the Commercialbank Qatar Masters. He’s just a few shots off the lead and is in great position for his first career European Tour victory. Willett is ranked in the top 30 on the current Race to Dubai list and is on pace for his third top-15 finish already this season. He’s playing a RAZR Hawk Tour Driver this week.
