Making headlines in the golf world isn’t anything new for Callaway Staff Pro and LPGA Tour star Lydia Ko (@LKo424). Two years ago she became the youngest winner in LPGA history when she captured the 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Open as an amateur. The following year she won the same event to become the first amateur to win twice on the LPGA.
And now she’ll have to get comfortable sharing the front page with the likes of President Obama and other global leaders as one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World.
The 17-year-old, who is coincidentally celebrating her birthday on the day of the announcement, is the only golfer and one of five athletes to make Time’s list.
“Lydia Ko is exceptionally talented, mature beyond her years and wellliked by golf fans and competitors alike,” said fellow Callaway ambassador and World Golf Hall-of-Famer Annika Sorenstam, who wrote her tribute. “She is responsible for sparking increased interest in our sport not just in her native South Korea and adopted homeland of New Zealand but also among juniors across the globe.”
Ko currently sits at No. 4 on the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings and has already notched three top 10s in eight events this season. Her ability to connect with fans all over the world has caught the attention of her peers and the media.
Added Sorenstam, “Her early, record-breaking success brings with it incredible pressure — and she’s doing a fantastic job handling the many responsibilities that accompany stardom. Her future is very bright. All I can add is to enjoy the ride!”
