Pro Picks: Honda Classic

Jeff Newton

Our Callaway staffers are hitting the ground running as we kick off the Florida Swing. Let’s get right to it.

The Picks

Harry Arnett (SVP, Marketing)
Harry’s Picks
: James Hahn, Freddie Jacobson, Gary Woodland

Well, as a golf prognosticator, turns out I’m pretty lousy. Note to self, do not quit day job to become a professional gambler. Repeat, do not become a professional gambler.

Wow, I took a beating last week. My pick to win it all lost in the first round. By a lot. We won’t see another beat down like that until the Dallas THP event when Hashtag, MattyH, ScottyG, and I come to whip those basement dwellers. See how mean I get when I’m making bad PGA Tour picks?

But there’s always this week after another trunk slammer for me. I feel some good mojo this week. I mean that. I really do.

– James Hahn. I’m just going to ride this one out. I’m sure if Hashtag were here he’d say something about this event being renamed the “Hahn” Da Classic. I won’t do that. It’s beneath me. But James is well on his way to a Rookie of the Year type year. Should we start calling him ROY? Roy Hahn. I kind of like that. Hahn’s going to be holding up the Golden Civic (I actually have no idea what the trophy looks like at the Honda, but they really should make it a Golden Civic).

– Freddy Jac. Why not? This guy does nothing that looks all that great when you watch him hit balls. Oh, except it takes him fewer strokes than anybody. And, he gave me a great wedge tip at the PGA Show. Freddy said to just go with a 56 degree wedge all year and learn to play all the shots with it. When I’m too good with it, add in another wedge. Genius. Love the Jac. Thanks, Freddy, I’m picking you.

– Gary Woodland. I played this course last January and I couldn’t believe how hard it was. You have to be long here and be able to flight your ball because the wind always blows. The Bear Trap is obscenely hard too. So I’m going with Woodland. Would be good to see him holding up the Golden Civic too.

Okay, there it is. Hahn, Jac, and Woodland. Thems my boys this week. Should be yours too. See you next Wednesday.

Greg Sabella (Trade Marketing Director)
Greg’s PicksBrian Stuard, Jacobson, Ernie Els

Pick 1 – Brian Stuard – Off to a great start in 2013 finishing in the Top 10 in 50% of his starts.  He ranks 9th in strokes gained, 8th in scoring average and 3rd in scrambling which will be a huge advantage navigating through the Bear Trap.

Pick 2 – Jacobson – With 3 consecutive Top 10’s, Freddie is obviously in good form.  He is in his home state and eating “home” cooking from his restaurant in town. PGA National seems to fit him well, with 3 Top 15 finishes in the past 4 years.  Look for Freddie on Sunday to make a charge if he hasn’t already taken the lead into the final round.

Pick 3Els – A home event for The Big Easy, at a course he plays extremely well.  He’s never missed a cut at PGA National and has 2 top 20’s in 4 starts this year.  He always hits it pure, and if his VERSA putter is on this week, EE could be hoisting his 20th PGA Tour Trophy on Sunday.

Jason Finley (Marketing Director)
Jason’s Picks: Nicolas Colsaerts, Jacobson, Woodland

As the Tour moves to Florida, #TeamCallaway is ready to go and in prime form.

For my first pick, I will go with Nicolas Colsaerts. After a strong #Xbomb performance last week, he is now the leader of Team Callaway and ready to drop a few more this week. He had a good week in the Match Play and will continue the trend this week.

Next will be Freddie Jacobson. He is putting great with his VERSA putter and has played great the last three weeks. Expect him to continue the trend this week in what is a home game for him.

My final pick for the week is Gary Woodland. With how lucky his Kansas Jayhawks got this week, I am hopeful that he will also get some of the same good fortune and combined with his talent will tame the Bear Trap.

Jeff Newton (Tour Beat Writer)
Jeff’s Picks: Els, Colsaerts,  Jacobson

Pick #1 – Els
Els has found his game in recent weeks and I’ve got a good feeling about him on this tough course. The winds tend to pick up at PGA National and that should bode well for a two-time Open Champion. Just a thought.

Pick #2 – Colsaerts
Colsaerts caught fire in his early rounds at the Match Play last week and went on to finish T9. He also ranks second on Tour in driving distance and leads all our staffers with 25 X Bomb patches this year for his 325+ yard drives. Take a look at our X Team page to see just how far our boys are hitting it this year. And, oh yeah, keep an eye out for Colsaerts this week.

Pick #3 – Jacobson
Why do I like Freddie this week? Let’s see, three straight top-10s, one of the best putters on Tour with his Odyssey Versa gamer and he’s playing in his home state. Word from our Tour Trailer guys is he took everyone to his burger joint on Tuesday night too. That’s good karma right there. So if you’re ever in Palm Beach Gardens stop by Chuck Burger Joint. And if you’re looking for a pick this week, go with Freddie.

The Final Word

We’ve got our picks locked in. Now we want to know…which Callaway staffers do YOU  like this week?
