The Callaway #ZooCrew made a field trip out to Bay Hill this week for the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Some of our boys have been off on their picks lately and maybe a little time with our staffers, and Mr. Palmer himself, is just what they needed to get back on the right track.
I have gone to extremes this week to make sure that I get some momentum going with these picks. For those of you who’ve been following our picks this season, you know that Big Mo and I haven’t exactly been on the same page. We haven’t even been in the same book. Heck, we haven’t even been in the same library!
So I decided I needed to do some serious homework this week and actually went to Bay Hill to personally check on the players in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. I even met with the King himself, Arnold Palmer, to see if some of his majesty could rub off on me (and God I hope so, because the day I met Mr. Palmer, he was having dinner that night with Kate Upton. 83-years-old and still has IT!)
So here we go, here we go, here we go!
-Jim Furyk. Furyk played great in Tampa, which was playing extremely tough. He was in the trailer on Tuesday working on his own driver. I love the DIY guys. I told him I was picking him to win this week in our office picks and he asked me how much money would we be splitting WHEN he wins. Love the #bringit attitude.
-Phil Mickelson. He’s got heavy arsenal in the bag now with RAZR Fit Xtreme and the X Hot Pro 3Deep fairway. That’s a lot of firepower for a guy who loves firepower. He may just win out and win every week now. That might be a record.
-Branden Grace. Met him for the first time Tuesday on the putting green and all he could talk about was how much fun he was having playing in the States. I love it when a Tour player talks about having fun playing. Shows his head is on straight and he’s ready to break out. I then saw him again walking to the first tee and I asked him what kind of shot he was going to play.
He said he was just going to bomb it over the tree to the right and draw it back a little into the fairway…and then he did just that. This just in: these guys are good at golf. Branden also wanted to get his Xbombs on his bag and personally oversaw the Marketing Warrior Princess apply them. So he’s locked in and ready to win.
There you go: Furyk, Mickelson, and Grace. Sounds like a law firm, but is actually my money picks for the week.
Greg Sabella (Marketing Director – Odyssey/Golf Ball)
Greg’s Picks: Furyk, Chris Kirk, Mickelson
#1 Jim Furyk – Coming off a great week in Tampa and hitting a ton of greens with his new X Forged Irons. He plays well at the King’s course and this year should be no different. Hits is straight, hits it close, makes a lot of putts.
#2 Chris Kirk – Back in action after a few weeks off, he warmed up with an X Hot Long Drive event on Tuesday. Rumor has it he was hitting 6* drivers off of cans and blanketing the fairway. He’s ranked 4th in all around after making 5 of 6 cuts this year with two top 5’s and three top 25’s. Just got a new custom putter, so look for him to get hot on the greens.
#3 Phil – VERSA in the bag this week and when he switches putters, he putts well. He hasn’t played well at Bay Hill in the past few years, but when he’s hitting fairways he’s tough to beat. Gearing up for Augusta, so his game should be dialed in.
Jason Finley (Marketing Director – Woods/Irons)
Jason’s Picks: Mickelson, Gary Woodland, Kirk
My first pick is Phil this week. With his history of strong play and preparation for the Masters, Phil is ready for a great week.
My next pick is Gary Woodland. Coming off of defending his #Xbomb title on Tuesday, he is primed to get another victory, just won’t get another cool belt to go with it! He is also sleeping in his own bed this week which will be an added bonus.
My final pick for the week is Chris Kirk. His swing is looking good and he is ready to get back on top of the leaderboard.
Jeff Newton (Tour Beat Writer)
Jeff’s Pick (Hey, It Worked Out Last Week): Furyk
I’m feeling pretty good after putting all my chips behind Furyk last week and watching him contend through the weekend. I’m going to keep backing him until he his an off week, which isn’t very often for him. Love the confidence he showed too when he asked Harry how much they were going to split WHEN he won. You think he’s feeling good right now?
The Final Word
We’ve got a great group of staffers in the field but of course the real star this week is Mr. Palmer. Based on the numbers, we like Phil to take the winning photo with Arnie on Sunday evening, and watch out for Chris Kirk and Furyk.
That’s how we see it. Who you got this week?
