“I’m a totally different golfer than last year at this time. I have Callaway equipment now, the equipment’s been amazing. I absolutely love the new equipment.” – Patrick Reed
Playing with the new Big Bertha Alpha Driver, an SR 3 Golf Ball and a red hot Odyssey Metal-X Milled #6 Putter in his bag, Patrick Reed set the 54-hole scoring record in relation to par (at 27-under) on his way to a spectacular wire-to-wire win at the Humana Challenge.
Here’s the rundown on Patrick’s Callaway equipment in a week highlighted by his incredible 63-63-63 stretch over the first three rounds, which led to his second PGA Tour win in the last six months:
Big Bertha Alpha Driver (9°) – Fujikura Fuel 85x Shaft
Big Bertha Fairway Wood (16°) – Mitsubishi Ahina 80x Shaft
X Forged ’13 Irons (3-4)
RAZR X Muscleback Irons (5-PW)
Mack Daddy 2 Wedges (50°, 56°, 60°)
Odyssey Metal-X Milled #6 Putter
An SR 3 Golf Ball
* His driver has 9.5° of actual loft, 44 1/4” length, with 1” total tipping, and it’s set in the Neutral directional bias. It’s also built with the Gravity Core up (towards the crown). Reed averaged 305.8 yards per drive and hit nearly 70% of fairways through the first three rounds.
*He played a new 16° Big Bertha Fairway Wood for the first time this week, set to a Neutral bias and a Standard Adjustability.
* He was fourth in the field in Putts Per GIR (1.544). Odyssey Tour Rep Johnny Thompson says that Reed took an immediate liking to the Metal-X Milled #6 Putter, which he first put in play at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
“This was a seamless transition. It was matched to his (previous putter) specs and he received it before the Hyundai Tournament of Champions…he put it into play there and never had an issue.” – Johnny Thompson, Odyssey Tour Rep
Patrick appeared to have a lot of confidence and huge goals for the season when he sat down for a Callaway Talks at our 2014 Ad Shoot. During the interview, he said, “We’ve only won one event. We’ve got a lot more events to win to catch up to…all the great players in the world, so we’re going to put the pedal down and keep going.”
It looks like he’s not slowing down any time soon! Congratulations to Patrick on a great victory!
Larrazabal Gets First Tour Win For Alpha and SR 3 (By A Few Hours)
Callaway staffer Pablo Larrazabal also delivered with a clutch 67 to hold off some of the world’s best players, including Phil Mickelson, to win the star-studded Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.
And as if that wasn’t enough, it was the first Tour win for our new Big Bertha Alpha Driver and SR 3 Golf Ball, you know, a few hours before Reed won with HIS Big Bertha Alpha and SR 3 in Palm Springs.
Here’s what was in Pablo’s bag for his third career European Tour victory:
Big Bertha Alpha Driver (8.5°)
An SR 3 Golf Ball
X Hot 3-Wood
RAZR Fit Xtreme 5-wood
Callaway X Forged 13 Irons (3-5)
RAZR X Muscleback Irons (6-9)
Odyssey White Hot Pro V-Line Putter
The Big Bertha Alpha is available 2/14. Callaway Tour Reps have told us that the adjustable Gravity Core in Alpha has really impressed our Staff Pros in player testing.
“We generally start with the Gravity Core in the up position, because it’s a lot easier to convince a (Tour player) to take spin off then to give them spin,” Callaway Tour Rep Mike Sposa said in a recent episode of Callaway Talks.
“I tell you what, we don’t see too many guys having to change from that up position. The driver just has got a super nice, flat flight and the ball speeds are faster than anything we’ve seen in a long, long time.”
The new SR 3 Golf Ball has been a go to choice for players as well, which is no surprise since it’s specifically designed to have the best aerodynamic performance for Tour-level swing speeds of 105 mph and above. The SR 1, 2 and 3 Golf Balls are all available 1/24.
With this win, Larrazabal moves up to seventh in the Race to Dubai standings, joining fellow Callaway staffers Thomas Bjorn (first) and Branden Grace (sixth) in the top-10. Congratulations Pablo!
Mickelson Plays Alpha, Apex Pro Irons and SR 3 In T2 Finish
Phil Mickelson made a strong 2014 debut in Abu Dhabi, finishing in a T2 with a bunch of new equipment in his bag.
Here’s the rundown on Phil’s clubs:
That’s right, the Big Bertha Alpha, X2 Hot Pro Deep, X2 Hot Pro Irons, Apex Irons and SR 3 Golf Ball are all new for 2014. Phil’s been quick to tell our SVP of R&D, Alan Hocknell about how much he loves the new equipment.
When talking about Big Bertha Alpha before the Abu Dhabi event, he also said, “This year I have the best driver I’ve ever hit that lowers my spin rate just like my 3-wood. I drive it longer and straighter with my driver than I did with my 3-wood.”
Those are pretty strong words from the five-time major winner, who was fifth in the field in driving distance. It looks like it’s going to be another awesome year for Lefty!
It was a record-breaking, entertaining and of course winning week for our new equipment and our Staff Pros. We’re excited to keep it going! For more on all of our staffers, please visit our #TeamCallaway page.
