Frequently Asked Questions

How to choose a set of wedges

  • There are 4 different types of wedges: pitching, approach, sand and lob.

  • When selecting a wedge, it is important to have a model and shaft that matches your unique swing and playstyle.

  • Shop Opus SP and CB12 wedges for the latest in wedge technology.

What is the difference between an iron set wedge and a specialty wedge?

  • Iron set wedges match the set’s shape, offset, shaft length, and forgiveness, and are optimized for full-swing distance gapping. Modern iron sets will typically include a pitching wedge and an approach wedge.
  • Specialty/individual wedges (approach, sand, lob) are purpose-built for control—typically with more aggressive grooves/face milling, multiple bounce and grind options, slightly heavier heads/shorter shafts, and less offset for precise shot-making around the green and from bunkers.
  • It is common for golfers to pair a set pitching wedge (and sometimes approach wedge) with specialty sand and lob wedges to fine-tune spin and control.

How many wedges should I carry and what lofts should I choose?

  • Most golfers play 3–4 wedges spaced 4–6° apart (e.g., 46–48° PW/gap, 52–54° sand, 58–60° lob). Start from your current pitching-wedge loft and build down.

What is wedge bounce and why does it matter?

  • Bounce governs how the club interacts with the turf and sand. Higher bounce helps in soft sand and soft turf with steeper swings. Low bounce helps in firm turf and firm sand or shallow attack angles.

Which grind should I pick?

  • Grinds are sole shapes that fine-tune turf/sand interaction and open-face shots. Match your grind to swing type and course conditions: more sole relief = easier face manipulation; fuller soles = added forgiveness.

Wedge trade-in eligibility

  • Callaway Golf’s Trade In! Trade Up! Program allows you to turn in your current clubs for a credit towards the purchase of a brand-new wedge.
